Why Help?

We take on the toughest cases, the dogs no one wants to deal with. The little girl in this picture, Lily Rose, was 14 weeks old when she was abandoned to a vet's office because the owner couldn't afford to pay the bill. Lily was dying of starvation. She weighed only a hair over 5 pounds when we got her. She was taken immediately to my own vet and life supportive care - IV feedings, etc., were started while the diagnosis process began.

It was eventually discovered that LIly needed a surgery to remove a blockage in her little tummy - she had chewed a 2 x 2" piece of hand towel and had swallowed it. It blocked the exit to her tummy so she couldn't hold down any food.  The love and support of many caring people helped to offset the $1100 surgery and vet bill and her new owner paid the rest.

Lily is now a happy, healthy 4-year-old girl and is the pride and joy of her new family. It is precisely this kind of story that compels me to do what I do.

At left:  I dressed Lily Rose up in a little t-shirt on the day the vet told me she probably would not live through the night. I figured she deserved one pretty day and a dressup picture.

At right:  Lily Rose a month later - still in recovery, still at less than 50% of her expected body weight, but growing like a weed!

Please help us help more furkids like Lily Rose.

Ongoing Care Needs

Keeping a whole herd of Miniature Schnauzers (7 right now, to be exact!) is an expensive proposition. They do eat regularly, they need treats for rewarding good behavior, they need vet care, and they need regular haircuts and grooming. I do the grooming myself but I have to buy a new pair of clippers about every 6-8 weeks.

Special Needs

There are many other things we would love to do IF we had the financial resources. They include:

1) A metal building to allow us to help with large rescues (breeder surrenders, USDA kennel closures, hoarding situations, etc.).

2) A new swimming pool liner to replace the one in our above-ground pool to get it operational so the dogs could go swimming every day in good weather for exercise!

3) A treadmill to provide extra exercise for each furkid. See Cesar Millan's website to see how he uses the treadmill to calm overexcited dogs along with providing regular exercise.

4) Invisible fencing. We have 5 acres of property that includes meadows, woods and a pond. Our furkids think it's "Doggy Disneyland!"  One of our rescues, SueSu, is an expert escape artist and can get out of ANYTHING. We have two other tiny dogs, Monty and Harry, who are small enough to fit under the fence in the holes SueSu digs on a daily basis. We are scared to death that the dogs will get out onto the state highway, or be attacked by a predatory animal (we have coyotes and other such creatures here.) or encounter a snake, chicken hawk, raccoon, etc.

6) A Steam Mop. No kidding. Six of our furkids are boys and well... boys will be boys! We have a lot of trouble with marking in the house. I am constantly mopping up something. It would be nice to have the steam mop since it would kill and disinfect the germs (and therefore smell) of their marked spots.

Those are the major needs. If you have resources or even used good equipment to help meet these needs, we'd really appreciate your help!
